Bridging two worlds

Justyn Ramseur ’25 was surprised – and then delighted – by his academic journey from engineering to management

If someone had told me at the beginning of my college career that I would one day pursue a Master of Science in Management, I would have laughed and dismissed the idea. My academic path seemed clear-cut from the very beginning—engineering was my passion. In high school, I immersed myself in engineering classes, fascinated by the problem-solving nature of the field. My journey continued at UNC Charlotte where I graduated with a degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering. Engineering was more than just a major for me; it was a way of thinking, a systematic approach to understanding and improving the world.

Then life opened a door I didn’t know existed. My internship with Atom Power and my senior design project with Ingersoll Rand were pivotal experiences where I not only honed my technical skills but also discovered a passion for project management, process improvement and change management. I began to realize that while engineering provided me with the technical foundation, understanding the bigger picture—how projects are managed and implemented—was equally fascinating.

Deciding to enroll in the M.S. in Management program was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’ve gained insights into topics like organizational behavior, evidence-based management and strategic decision-making…the program has helped me develop softer skills like public speaking and networking—areas where I once felt less confident.

My senior design project was a clear example of this realization. Tasked with redesigning material presentation and delivery, my team managed a $3,000 budget and implemented a solution that saved the company approximately $15,800 per month in material loss. This experience was not just about engineering; it was about collaboration, strategic planning and effective communication with stakeholders. I thrived in this environment and found myself wanting to explore these aspects further. Around this time, I learned about the Master of Science in Management program at UNC Charlotte’s Belk College of Business. I was initially hesitant but the more I researched, the more I realized how this program could complement my technical background. It promised a deeper understanding of business concepts, leadership and strategy, all of which aligned perfectly with my growing interest in project and change management.

Deciding to enroll in the program was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Being part of a diverse group of individuals from various professional backgrounds has broadened my perspective and sharpened my collaborative skills. The camaraderie has not only made the learning experience enjoyable but has also provided me with invaluable networking opportunities. The program has exceeded my expectations in every way. I’ve gained insights into topics like organizational behavior, evidence-based management and strategic decision-making. Beyond the academics, the program has helped me develop softer skills like public speaking and networking—areas where I once felt less confident. It’s a holistic journey of growth, both personal and professional.

Looking back, my path from engineering to management might not have been what I envisioned but it feels like a natural progression. The skills I’ve gained in this program complement my technical expertise and have prepared me to take on diverse challenges. I’m excited to see where this unique combination of skills will lead me in the future. One thing is certain: taking that leap into the unknown has been the most rewarding part of my journey so far.
